Datasets I have been using
Over the past years I have been using different sources of data. I am happy to share my experience in using them, and talk about potential research questions that these could help address. Most of these datasets are freely available for research purposes.
Survey Data
The Houseold Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS): household-level survey produced by the ECB and collecting euro-area cross countries data on consumption, savings, investments starting from 2010.
The EU Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC): household- and individual-level survey produced by Eurostat and collecting euro-area cross countries information on poverty and living conditions starting from 2004.
The German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP): household-level survey produced by the DIW Berlin and collecting the main socio-economic and demographic information on German households starting from 1984.
The Survey of Household Income and Wealth (SHIW): household-level survey produced by the Bank of Italy and collecting economic and financial information on Italian households's behaviour starting from 1965.
Administrative datasets
The Sample of Integrated Labour Market Biographies (SIAB): administrative dataset collected by the FDZ-IAB in Germany and containing information on the main economic and socio-demographic characteristics for a 2% random sample of the employees subject to the social security contribution system and starting from 1975.
The Linked-Employer-Employee-Data (LIAB): administrative dataset collected by the FDZ-IAB in Germany and containing information on a representative set of establishments and linking these information with those of the relative employees; this panel starts from 1975 as well.
Housing market data
Real Estate Data: a dataset containing information on all the residential properties in Germany posted on the web-platform ImmobilienScout24 produced by RWI-Essen starting from 2007; information refer to listed prices and rents.
Immowelt Data: as for ImmobielienScout24, Immowelt gives access to information on all residential properties in Germany posted through their website. The access to these data is restricted.
Additional datasets
Socio-economic data at the grid level: a private dataset containing information on households demographics, mobility and economic conditions at the 1km2-grid level for Germany. The dataset is produced by MICROM, a commercial marketing provider.
The German Local Population Database (GPOP): a dataset containing information on the historical population at a small geographical scale for Germany. The dataset is independently produced by Felix Roesel (Technische Universitat Braunschweig) and publicly available at the indicated source.
